How Perimenopause Inspired the SleepingDove Cooling Comforter

In 2023, I was in my late 40’s. My career was going great. My 11-year-old Maltipoo was finally warming up to his new rescue puppy brother. And I had just gone on a first date with my now-partner James—the most amazing man—and we fell in love.

All was well until I met… perimenopause.

Suddenly, me—someone who had always been a cold sleeper and needed a warm blanket on top to fall asleep and stay asleep—found myself waking up drenched in sweat through my midsection. I’d push the blanket down. Too cold. Pull it back up. Too hot. Add an extra blanket over my shoulders. By 3 a.m., it had slipped off somewhere and I’d jump out of bed to find it. Turn the AC up. Then back down. This endless back-and-forth became a nightly struggle that left me completely drained

I scoured the web for a solution to help me cool off at night. I looked at everything: split blankets with zippers, NASA-engineered fabrics, fan-cooled comforters, even water-circulating mattress pads. Why was every option tied to some kind of high-tech device? I couldn’t understand why anyone would think a woman going through menopause and hot flashes would want to rely on technology to sleep comfortably. I absolutely didn’t.

I felt defeated. Quality sleep was slipping away. And as much as I loved having James next to me, his body warmth only added to my misery. What I wanted was simple: a natural cooling comforter.

That’s when the idea of adding windows to a comforter came to me. It happened at my lowest point of frustration, but the concept made perfect sense. If you could lift away the thickest part of the comforter just where you overheat, you’d stay covered while still letting your body release heat. No gadgets. No wires. No engineered fabrics. Just thoughtful design and breathable cotton.

Why We Pursued It

For me, the Sleeping Dove Comforter is more than just bedding. It’s the answer to nights of tossing and turning, the relief I wished I had when perimenopause disrupted my sleep. It’s also a message to every woman who’s been told to just “deal with it” or buy a gadget—that there’s a better way. And that message extends beyond menopause. It’s for hot sleepers of every kind, like couples with different sleep needs or pet owners with their furries curled up on the bed. Because overheating at night is a problem that so many of share.

Perimenopause is a journey that deserves more understanding, more solutions, and more compassion. We created the Sleeping Dove Comforter not just to solve a personal problem, but to give women, and anyone who overheats at night, an option that feels organic, elegant, and restorative. Everyone deserves to wake up feeling rested, comforted, and cared for.
