DJ couldn't sleep, so we built a better comforter.

Like many couples, DJ and James loved falling asleep next to each other. But DJ kept waking up overheated, pushing the comforter off, pulling it back on, too hot, too cold, all night long. She needed a natural way to cool down without giving up the comfort of sharing one blanket. One morning, she wondered:

“What if a comforter had windows?”

With James’s engineering skills, they began working through prototype after prototype. Scraps of fabric all over the floor. More scissors than any couple needs. Two years later, that idea became the patented Softwing Natural Cooling System.

How do the panels stay where I put them?

Gravity does the work. The default resting position is closed: the panel rests against your body, held there by its own weight. No fasteners, Velcro, zippers, or magnets. To cool down, lift a panel open, removing the insulation so you can cool with the built-in sheet underneath. To warm up, bring the panel closed and let gravity keep it against your body. It’s a one-handed motion you can do half-asleep.

How is this different from a cooling pad or cooling mattress?

Cooling pads and cooling mattresses are designed to cool the bed beneath you. Many use cooling materials, pumps, fans, water systems, apps, electricity, or subscription-based technology. They also don’t solve the shoulder-coverage problem. They may cool your back, but your torso can still overheat under a normal comforter. Sleeping Dove is a comforter, not a bed. It costs far less than many cooling sleep systems, uses zero electricity, and releases heat exactly where your body tends to hold it: your core and feet. You stay covered, but you can cool naturally.

What does it actually feel like?

The shell is 100% cotton sateen with a smooth, slightly lustrous feel. Baffle-box construction keeps the fill evenly lofted, helping prevent cold or thin spots. Reviewers describe it as “sleeping inside a cloud.” When a panel is open, a single breathable cotton layer stays over your skin, so you’re never bare.

Do you have a patent?

Yes — U.S. Patent No. 12,557,926, issued February 24, 2026. The patent covers our Softwing Natural Cooling System™, which provides targeted cooling while helping sleepers stay comfortably covered. A PCT application has also been filed internationally.

How do I wash it?

The Down Alternative is machine washable. The Down requires professional laundering as with any quality down comforter.

Will it fit my bed?

Yes. Queen is 91″ × 94″. King / Cal King is 107″ × 94″. The King fits both standard King and California King.

Why can’t I just shift down my comforter and use a sheet to cool?

A sheet can cool you, but it doesn’t give you the insulation, loft, and comforting weight people want from a comforter. People sleep under comforters not just for warmth, but for the feeling of being held, especially around the shoulders and upper chest — the kind of comfort that helps the body relax and drift deeper into sleep.
